Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that the provincial Works and Services Department is a key institution, therefore, it has to ensure the quality of work in construction of roads and buildings. The chief minister warned that he would not tolerate corruption and inefficiency in execution of the development works.

The CM was presiding over a meeting of the Department, here on Thursday, during which, he was given presentation on foreign-funded development projects. The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Dev), Aijaz Ali Khan; Principal Secretary to CM, Alamuddin Bullo; Secretary Works & Services, Aijaz Memon; Secretary (Tec) P&D, Rajani; Special Secretary Finance, Hassan Naqvi; chief engineer Works & Services department and other concerned staff.

ACS (Dev) Aijaz Ali Khan said that Rs 3037.4 million worth Chinese-assisted project for the reconstruction of Nawabshah-Sanghar Road was being launched. China was going to finance 85 percent (Rs 1780.535 million) cost of the project, while Sindh government was contributing 15 percent of the total cost, which came to Rs 1256.9 million, he added.

He said that the length of the road was 60 kilometres and it would be completed within two years after award of the contract. "We are going to invite international competitive bidding within next few days," he said.

Secretary W&S Aijaz Memon said that Sindh Road Improvement Project worth $197.8 million was being launched with the assistance of Asian Development Bank. The ADB was providing 87 percent funding while Sindh government was bearing 13 percent cost of the project, he added.

He said that under the project, 328 kilometres road would be constructed, including 67km Tando-Mohamamd Khan-Badin Road, 55km Digri-Naukot, 64km Khyber-Sanghar via Tando Mohammad Khan, 63km Sanghar-Mirpurkhas via Sindhi, 36km Sheranpur-Ratodero Road and 44km Thul-Kandhkot Road. "An Expression of Interest has been floated for the project management consultant on December 12, 2015," he said.

Talking about Japanese-assisted rural roads project, the secretary W&S said that it was launched at Rs 8875.19 million in which Sindh government shared Rs 650.88 million. Under the project, 28.79km road has been constructed in Thatta district, 39.996km in Dadu/Jamshoro, 17.280km in Hyderabad, 73.212km in Larkana/Shahdadkot, 71.596km in Shikarpur, 183.9km in Khairpur, 103.155km in Jacobabad/Kandhkot and 10.57km road in Sukkur districts. The chief minister directed ACS (Dev) Aijaz Ali Khan to send his team to inspect the completed roads and give him a detailed report on their quality.
